I've constructed it for a faster manipulation of the information properties of a file. It displays nearly all properties and the important properties are also changeable.
Finally I say "get access to the information fork of every file".
Installation
Make sure the standard AppleScript package of System 8.5 or later is installed.
Start the "Installer".
In the case the Installer doesn't work:
Move the Scripting Additions in the "--> Scripting Additions" folder to the "Scripting Additions" folder (You find this folder in the system folder.) and restart your computer.
Perhaps you may make a copy of FileHandler in the AppleMenu and make an alias in the startup items folder.
The only reason restarting your computer is to enable making files visible and invisible. If you don't want to use this function at first you may restart later.
How to use it
First you have to import a file. There are four different ways:
1.: Select the file in the Finder and start FileHandler from the AppleMenu.
2.: Drop the file on (the icon of) FileHandler.
3.: Use the Open… menu item within the application.
4.: Drop a file on the small window (with the FileHandler icon) in the top left corner.
The second option is always enabled. (Even while the application is running.)
A window opens (if not already opened) and initializes its contents. You see many properties. If you are not sure about the sense of a property move the cursor to the label and the textbox on top will describes it.
The real use of FileHandler is the ability to change the properties. The changeable properties are indicated with underlined labels.
Click on the label to change a property. In some cases the textbox that contain the information becomes editable. (name, type, creator and comment) Enter the new value. Click again on the underlined label to confirm. If you want to cancel your action press the [esc] button instead of clicking on the label. The property remains untouched.
In other cases you toggle between two statements and automatically confirm by clicking on the label. (visible, stationery and locked)
The label is changeable through a popup. Zero stands for no label. One for the first, two for the second and so on. Click again on the label to confirm.
You also see some buttons on top of the window. They are described by the text box on top while the cursor is over the button.
